My Story

Thank you so much for visiting my website. My name is Sheela Becton and I am an Indian American Artist based in Maryland. I want to share my journey of resilience and unwavering determination in the face of adversity. However, it is also a journey illuminated by moments of triumph and strength, where resilience shines brightest in the darkest of times.

I was born and raised in India and was drawn to Art at an early age. Although I learnt dance, music and Art being in the Arts Program the last 2 years of my high school, choosing Art as a career was not encouraged. I got married at a young age and after a bad divorce came to the United States in 1997. I remember the day I landed in Dulles Airport a single Mother with 2 young kids, a suitcase of clothes and $10. What I had was a determination to give myself and my children a better life.  I worked hard pursuing a career in IT and had a successful career in IT and Higher Education for 25 years.

During my IT career I felt the void of being a creative so in 2008 I bought a canvas and some oil paints and started painting to help be relive some of the stress from my job and life. I never looked back. My kids chose successful career paths and had recently moved out. I converted one of the bedrooms to a studio and I have been pursuing my passion for Art in my home studio.

In 2021 at the age of 58, I decided to quit my job and purse my passion as a full-time professional Artist. I take pride in saying that I call myself a self-taught Artist. I enjoy the meditative studio practice and take the opportunity of pursuing my Art as a blessing to express myself on canvas. I had my first Solo Exhibition in 2022 and continue to participate in group and Solo exhibits in and around Maryland.

I take inspiration from a strong line of Matriarchs including my mother who instilled the values of perseverance and determination in me. The feminine form is central to my practice and I take inspiration from my own life and my heritage to explore themes of strength, resilience, harmony, and interconnectedness.

My Art journey thus far has been personally rewarding for my mind and soul and I strive to share my art with you in the pursuit of inviting you to find common connections. I Thank you for being a part of my journey.

Sincerely,

Sheela Becton
